Our experience
The life experience of the Latin American community is unique. Many of us emigrate from our countries of origin and struggle to maintain our customs and traditions while trying to adapt to a different environment. Most of us originate from a collective culture and upon arriving in the United States we face an individualistic culture that opposes our idea of life. Both, those of us who emigrate and the first generations born in the United States are affected by the consequences of discrimination, racism, and sometimes abuse. We struggle with the ravages left by the trauma of harmful experiences and we are left exhausted. We begin to feel ashamed of our experiences and believe that this doesn’t happen to anyone else. However, emotional and psychological support exists to help us process and gather skills that promote healing and a sense of safety.

What are the benefits of working with a Latina therapist?
In simple terms, when working with me you find a safe, confidential, respectful, and open space. I practice cultural sensitivity because your experience is not unknown to me. I empathize with you during your identity struggles. I acknowledge the impact of roles and expectations based on gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexual identity and expression and how they intersect and influence mental health and interpersonal relationships. I am familiar with the intergenerational structures and dynamics of our people. This allows for a more nuanced exploration of interpersonal relationships and family issues. Mindful of this I help you find alternatives that really align with your goals and your values.
I do not disregard the migration experience, as as an immigrant myself, I understand the stressors related to this mobilization. I provide support focused on the understanding of the unique challenges associated with an immigration status, available opportunities, and other related issues.
I help you understand how your life experiences can contribute to conditions such as anxiety, depression, substance abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other emotional difficulties. I provide you with psychoeducation; understanding how trauma affects the development and abilities of your brain and body. I connect how systemic inequalities affect you personally and I work with you to promote your empowerment. I help strengthen your resilience through strategies that help you address conflicts, find attainable solutions, and reinforce your self-esteem. And, I also incorporate culturally adapted interventions and therapeutic approaches that resonate with your needs.
In essence, working with a Latina therapist who speaks your language, respects your experiences and culture as well as your individuality provides a unique opportunity to explore your life, address your needs, strengthen your skills, and facilitate your personal growth.
